What does finding a stone mean?
A gallstone does not always cause symptoms or require treatment. The pattern of pain and whether it is related to the stones are assessed together.
What helps guide assessment?
Examination and ultrasound help assess gallstones. Blood tests and further imaging may be used to investigate inflammation or problems in the bile ducts.
Which symptoms should not wait?
Prolonged abdominal pain, fever, jaundice or vomiting needs prompt assessment. Stones causing these symptoms are approached differently from stones that cause none.
