How abscesses and fistulas relate
An abscess is a pocket of infection. A fistula is an abnormal channel that may connect the anal canal to the skin and can develop after an abscess.
What assessment involves
Pain, swelling, discharge and previous abscesses are reviewed. Imaging may help establish the course of a fistula and its relationship to nearby muscles.
Timely assessment
Increasing pain, swelling or fever needs prompt assessment. An abscess may need drainage; fistula treatment depends on its anatomy and any underlying condition.
