Are there symptoms?
Gallstones may cause no symptoms. If they block the flow of bile, they can cause pain, often in the upper right abdomen.
How they are assessed
Symptoms and examination findings are considered alongside imaging, such as ultrasound, and blood tests when needed. The location of stones and any inflammation matter.
When to seek prompt care
Seek prompt medical care for prolonged abdominal pain, fever, jaundice or vomiting. Stones causing no symptoms require an individual assessment of whether treatment is needed.
