When it is considered
Surgery may be considered when gallstones cause symptoms or complications. The decision is different for stones that cause no symptoms.
Planning the procedure
The operation removes the gallbladder. Inflammation, previous surgery and overall health may influence the approach; stones in the bile duct require separate consideration.
After surgery
Advice about food, activity and follow-up is individualized. Bowel habits may change; persistent symptoms and possible complications should be discussed with the surgeon.
